I’ve been a fan of colloidal silver ever since I had an unfortunate run-in with a burst radiator hose. I suffered 2nd degree burns all over the right side of my face, neck, shoulder, chest, and arm. I had several smaller areas of 3rd degree burning on my collar bone and armpit.
A nearby urgent care clinic prescribed me a miracle salve called silver sulfadiazine 1%. This salve almost immediately gave me relief from the overwhelming pain of my burns. I had many concerns at the time – the volume of skin I had lost, the potential for infection, the certain scarring I would have, and the ever-present pain. But all I could do was go home and apply the silver salve according to the directions on the label. I applied the salve with extreme care several times each day. After less than a week I lost a layer of skin that was basically dead and dry. I was left with the sensitive pink skin underneath, but no open wounds, no infection, and only minimal scarring! It seemed that there was very little actual damage. I kept applying the silver salve for another week, and that was that. Completely healed. I avoided some pretty unthinkable pain and complications.
Within about four months, you couldn’t even see any evidence of scarring. Although to this day, when I get sun on the area, certain portions of the skin never get color – that’s really no big deal.
Ever since this happened, I have been looking for silver sulfadiazine 1%, but it is only available with a prescription. I do not want to grapple with another radiator hose to get a prescription – the hose always wins. Moreover, the prescription salve runs for more than $69 for a tiny 4 oz jar, and insurance doesn’t always cover it.
But this stuff is superb – it knocks out severe sunburns overnight. I used the remainder of my prescription on various minor burns and skin issues with 100% success. I did some internet research and spoke with some chemists from a local university, and I came up with a “DIY” formula that has proven to have effects similar to the prescription silver sulfadiazine 1%, without the need for a prescription. The formula is below, but please note that you should talk to your doctor before putting anything on or in your body. The prescription for silver sulfadiazine 1% comes with a warning that pregnant women ad anyone with allergies to silver should not use it, so I would imagine the same goes for this homemade stuff, or any colloidal silver products for that matter.
Homemade Silver Salve Burn Treatment
Instructions
In a small (4 oz) jar, add:
2 Tablespoons virgin, raw coconut oil
1 Tablespoon 100% Aloe vera gel
1 Tablespoon colloidal silver (15ppm – 28ppm recommended)
4 drops of essential oil for fragrance
Put the lid on the jar and shake the heck out of the mixture to blend it completely. That’s it!
For the essential oil, I recommend doTerra Lavender because it is good for skin irritation and it smells awesome, but you can use peppermint or whatever you like to give it fragrance. If you have an Aloe vera plant available, I highly recommend squeezing the juice of a full leaf into the mix. This is what I did, and I think that contributed to this salve’s awesome effectiveness. The batches I have made turn white when mixed, which is cool because the separate ingredients are all totally clear.
Note that you should always keep colloidal silver out of direct sunlight, and you shouldn’t refrigerate it because the silver ions will re-bind and then sink to the bottom. However, since this solution is thicker than straight colloidal silver, I’m guessing that it won’t be an issue. I opted to refrigerate my latest batch because it’s hot in AZ and I want the fresh ingredients to last the summer. I’ve used this salve several times to conquer even blistering sunburns on my nephew’s nose, and I can’t say enough about it.
Contact me if you’re unable to find any of the ingredients above, I may be able to help you. Enjoy!

Thanks AZMark – I’m glad you came out of that radiator hose incident without too much damage. It’s very nice of you to share this recipe with the group.
I used a deodorant a few years ago that I got from a local farmers market. It had colloidal silver as the active ingredient, and you were supposed to apply it after you started stinking, not before. It worked great! I quit using it because someone scared me by telling me I would turn blue. Later, I learned that turning blue was extremely unlikely, but I couldn’t find the deodorant anymore at the farmers market…
While I do not recommend Do Terra company products, lavender is recognised and researched as excellent for burn treatment. It can be applied neat and takes the pain out fast, and does not damage the skin. It has other excellent qualities. PubMed gives many many researches on this and other oils.
I will try this but years ago I got blistered on the gulf coast. The pharmacist recommended Follies ontiment and it works. It relieves the burn and I found that my skin did not peel where I applied it. Most of the time you have to ask the pharmacist if they have it. It is not prescription but works wonders for sunburn.
Just a comment on the essential oil for fragrance. If using a good essential oil such as DoTERRA oil as recommended, it does much more than just add fragrance… it can help take down the swelling and pain and speed the healing process. I would not recommend just any essential oil for smell as some are adulterated oils and they can have the opposite effect and potentially cause harm. Even lavender alone can be wonderfully healing if no time to make the whole salve or just the silver. I recommend silver sol, different from colloidal – a step up. We used this on a severe burn on our granddaughter. She was to have skin grafts but by the time she got to see pediatric surgeon (7 hours) the healing was happening and no grafts were needed. 3rd degree burn downgraded to second. Feel free to contact me as well if you want additional information on either oils or silver. Be healthy and happy – Angelica RN/ND http://www.herbsandthings.net
Colloidal silver should be avoided. It is toxic. A heavy metal. You might recall the man who literally turned blue from toxic poisoning from colloidal silver.
Hi Robyn – There is some good information on this subject here – New Guidelines for Safe Usage of Colloidal Silver. I think the type of silver you use and how often you use it are both factors its safety.
Well said Michael,
The old stories of the “Blue Man” and the “Grey Lady” were an attempt to discredit Colloidal Silver. Most of the problems were from using silver naphate not colloidal silver. The Blue Man saturated his body with silver to stop a problem the doctors had given up all hope on and his statement at the time tells it all. “Better Blue Tan Dead”. I have been heavily into natural products and using Colloidal Silver since 1980. My body is not blue at this time but my eyes are blue—-since birth. I make my own silver with a simple to make 30 volt generator, pure silver rods and distilled water. It not only kills bacteria but viruses as well. No side effects and even kills mold spores. Thirty five years of use should say something.
The Black Death era of the middle ages in the EU used silver naphate (only the aristocracy could afford it) and it did change the skin color) hence the term “Blue Bloods.”
Robin – The amount of silver being recommended here will not turn you blue. The people that turn blue got that way by ingesting a very heavy concentration of true colloidal silver over a long period of time. The dosage here is for external use. And even if you decided to eat it or drink it it would still not likely do you any harm if done just a few times in smaller amounts. You make it sound like Monsanto’s RoundUp… it’s not.
AZMarks, thanks for sharing that burn and sunburn relief homemade Silver Salve treatment remedy. Here in south Florida, it seems like the sun is causing more sunburn than ever as I quickly discovered after only half a day in the ocean one day in May. Even with high SPF sunscreen. Aloe gel by itself used to work fast but this time it took more than a week to heal and the blisters took longer. So I’m definitely going to get the ingredients ready and try your homemade formula next time.
I have used colloidal silver for allergic rhinitis with pretty good results but was was not aware it had other benefits.
This is probably one the very best articles I have seen! I have personally suffered serious 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 11% of my body from a pressure cooking accident about 10 years ago and have always wanted to find something comparable to Silvidine cream – that stuff saved me, quite literally! I am anxious to try this recipe at home – it was 110 degrees here in Idaho yesterday and I have seen many sunburns in the past few days! Thank you so much for your research and for sharing this recipe!
I used raw egg whites the last time I got a bad burn and it worked great, I didn’t even peel!
Thank you for sharing this awesome information. I make my colloidal silver and have used it daily for over 20 years. Awesome stuff.
Hi. thanks for putting this recipe out there – I’m going to make some! I do have a question though – is there not sulfur in the original drug? Or is the name simply referring to the action or type of silver? Thanks so much! I’m a believer in coll silver so will definitely try it. 🙂
May I suggest a ‘Texas’ idea for relief. Rub vinegar on your skin. A little sting when applying but no pain and no flaking or itching afterward!
I was given a prescription for this product after a house fire in 1995 and have been using it ever since. I’ve had a sunburn a few times over the years, and this stuff works magic….quite literally overnight! My son uses it as well. Unfortunately for my wife, she is allergic to sulfa drugs. Thank you for sharing the recipe!

Updated thanks to autocorrect.. Sorry
Also, astaxanthin(12mg)/day is a great internal sunscreen. I have fair skin and have used this for several years and have not had a sunburn. If you are going to be going to a beach area it helps to start taking the astaxanthin several days before to “load” your system. Be sure to take a natural form of astaxanthin made from micro algae not synthetic.
