Take A Peek Into A Vault That Houses Humanities Greatest Treasure

Take a journey to the end of the earth and learn about the place that might someday save humankind. It’s a bank built to last 10,000 years. But something much more valuable than money or gold is on deposit. Currencies rise and fall with civilizations.
… this genetic resource stands between us and catastrophic starvation on a scale we cannot imagine”.  Jack Harland.
Now for the first time online, you can get a chance to watch a black-light documentary about a group that is gathering genetic material and storing it in a vault.  See how and why millions and millions of embryos are being collected from all the corners of the Earth.
These tiny lives are being kept in a remote location near the arctic circle.  In a place where polar bears outnumber humans, and reindeer outnumber everything.  It is the perfect place to keep this precious cargo in a frozen state of suspended animation.
How did this genetic vault come to exist?  What is its purpose and why is it needed?
What are the consequences if we don’t have this vault?
Should you contribute to the collection?
Should you be thinking about creating your own vault?

Gene banks of the world are crumbling, crop failures are producing starvation inspired rioting, and the accelerating effects of climate change are already affecting farmers globally. But Fowler’s journey, and our own, is just beginning: From Rome to Russia and, finally, a remote island under the Arctic Circle, Fowler’s passionate and personal journey may hold the key to saving the one resource we cannot live without: our seeds.
Our food system is not sustainable or secure and this is a problem that affects us all. Without a good agricultural foundation we can’t have sustainable agriculture and without sustainable agriculture, we will not have a sustainable future.

Officially, the seed bank is the “Svalbard Global Seed Vault.” It’s built to warehouse backup copies of all the world’s crops – 1.5 billion seeds – including everything from California sunflowers to ancient Chinese rice. If an asteroid strikes the earth, seeds to restart agriculture would come from the vault.
But the main purpose is to protect against a doomsday that is unfolding right now because the plants we’ve been eating for 10,000 years are going extinct.
What would you guess is the number of different varieties of apples?  Most people would say there are somewhere around a 10 to 25 different types of apples.  You know red ones, yellow ones, red delicious, Gaia, and Granny Smith.
Actually, there are about 1,000 named varieties.
But you know what is frightening?
As late as the 1800’s there were over 7,800 named varieties of apples.  Over 86% of the varieties have gone extinct.
If this trend of extinction continues, mass starvation and the collapse of society will occur.
The treasures that the vault was built to house took 10,000 years to develop and 70 years to collect.
And if these genetics are so important, isn’t that something you should consider saving for your family and community?
Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to see this amazing film and learn how the world’s most important assets are being collected for safe-keeping from climate change and nuclear war, locked deep inside the doomsday vault, as close to the north pole as you can get.
